Breastmilk or infant formula is the first baby food that the little angel consume. It has the nutrition that a newborn baby needs. However, it is recommended for baby to eat solid food after 6 months old. There are lots of consideration to make while feeding your baby on solid food. There are sign that your child is developmentally ready. The first sign of feeding solid food is when your child had good head and body control (can sit without support). Other than that, when your child opens his or her mouth and leans forward when food is offered, he or she might be ready too.
Experts recommend that parents could feed their baby on new food every three days. They should also watch closely for the signs of allergic reaction and avoid choking hazards. Let’s have a deeper consideration about feeding your baby. Solid food provides a more natural and nutritious for baby compare to milk.
What are the consideration when you feed your baby?
1. Preparation of the food
Preparation of the baby’s food is important to prevent choking and nutrient consuming. In the beginning, it is easier for your child to eat foods that are mashed, strained, pureed or smooth in texture. It is easier for your child to accept the new food textures with these preparations. They might spit, cough or gag.
There are foods that are potentially choking hazard, therefore it is very important to have the right texture for your baby. To prevent choking, prepare foods that does not need to chew or can be easily dissolve by saliva. Feed a small portion for every mouthful to your baby to encourage he or she to eat slowly.
Here are some suggestions:
- Parents could cook the food to the softest texture and smash it.
- Remove fats, skin and bones from meat or fish before cooking.
- Remove seed from fruits and cooked them until it is soft enough for baby to consume.
- Cut small spherical food such as tomatoes into small pieces.
2. Introduction of food to your child
Children or infant require certain vitamins and mineral to say healthy. Therefore, you wouldn’t wish that your children are a picky eater. Try to introduce new food to your children in a correct way. Let your children try one food at a time. Do not force it when they refuse to eat as it might be the food texture problem that might cause choking.
Parents should also check out on the allergy reaction on their child. Wait 3 to 5 days between each new food to make sure that they are not allergic to the food. Food allergy can cause lots of problems such as hives, itching, vomiting, coughing and more. The most common food allergic are against milk or dairy product, peanuts and shellfish.
3. Best food for babies
Other than breastmilk, there are some food that are full of nutrition and suitable for baby or children.
a. Avocados (6 months older)
Avocado is the best food for baby as it contains monounsaturated fats and smooth texture. Monounsaturated fats are a kind of good fats that could provide energy and improve the digestive system of babies.
b. Meat (7 to 10 months older)
Meat such as chicken, lamb or fish is an excellent source of protein, iron, riboflavin, vitamin B6 and more. However, parents should make sure that the meat is pureed to a smooth texture to avoid choking.
c. Yogurt (9 months older)
Plain whole-milk yogurt is rich in protein and contains calcium that benefit live active culture. Parents should not be confusing between plain yogurt and vanilla flavor yogurt as it might contain unnecessary food coloring or sugar.
d. Sweet potatoes (6 months older)
Sweet potatoes are so called baby superfood. It is one of the most nutritious foods for baby. Sweet potatoes contain vitamin A which are important for vision, healthy skin, body growth and immune system.
4. Worst food for babies
There are certain food that were strongly not recommended for babies.
a. Cow milk
Nowadays people do consume cow milk such as Dutch Lady or Farm Fresh. It is tasty and convenient. However, baby cannot easily digest cow milk although it is in liquid form. Cow milk can only be considered after on years old without any allergic reaction.
b. Honey
Honey is linked to infant botulism, an illness that can be fatal. The tummies of babies under age one simply can’t deactivate the botulism spores that might be in honey. Try to avoid this food until baby has passed their first birthday.
c. Salt
Baby should not eat salt as it would affect their kidney. Salt will dehydrate baby quickly. Do not add salt to your baby’s food or cooking water. Avoid salty food to your baby such as sausages or ready meals.
d. Shellfish
Raw or lightly cooked shellfish, such as mussels, clams and oysters, can increase the risk of food poisoning, so it's the best not to give it to babies. Even if it’s cooked, it might cause allergy reaction to the baby.

It is important for parents to keep the baby’s utensil clean while feeding them. This is because baby have weak immune system, germs and viruses could be attach on baby’s utensil and transmit to your baby.
